French style of ballet
A very brief history of the French style of ballet
Louis XIV – King of France (1643 – 1715), was an accomplished dancer of his time who trained two hours daily. During his reign, in 1672 a dance school was established and which several hundred years later has evolved to be known today as the highly acclaimed Paris Opera Ballet. This was thought to be the first ever ‘professional’ company – and with ONLY male members at the time!
The French style today is characterised mainly by the emphasis on precision of movement and careful footwork as well as elegant extension and use of the upper body. It is the essence of Ecole de Danse of Balham.
